NASHVILLE: UP FROM PROSTITUTION
Award-winning photojournalist Stephen Alvarez works on what he calls "the raw edges of the frontier." Alvarez has covered high-altitude archaeology in Peru, conservation in the roadless jungles of Suriname, rain forest research in Costa Rica, cave exploration in Borneo, and - prostitution in the United States. In early 2011, Alvarez and NPR's Jacki Lyden spent two months reporting on American women trying to break the cycle of prostitution.
"Nashville: Up From Prostitution
" is a 3 part radio segment and a short film that Alvarez shot. Alvarez gave A CIVIL REMEDY
permission to use one photograph as the preliminary Image for the film. This Image captures how law currently treats victims as criminals and what it might mean to place the power of law in victims' hands.
The women that I met initially researching the story - the lucky ones who are able to break the chain of violence and abuse - are among the strongest people I have ever met.
