WITHOUT EQUALITY/WITHOUT CONSENT

In 2003, an undercover vice detective compiled the police booking photos of dozens of women arrested for prostitution to show: “the ravages of living on the street, where eyes tell tales of pain and despair, anger and desperation.” I first saw these photographs over a decade ago. Three of the women in the photographs became the inspiration for this book.

WITHOUT EQUALITY/WITHOUT CONSENT is an unbound book composed of texts and photographic images. Designer Shannon Carroll creates a visual narrative with Taylor Cadwell’s black and white photographs of everyday street scenes, city locations, suburban neighborhoods, as well as poverty and social upheaval.

WITHOUT EQUALITY/WITHOUT CONSENT complements the photographic images with written texts: personal statements of the three women; commentaries by activists, advocates, and academics; and notes on the social, political, and legal dimensions of commercial sexual exploitation in America and globally.

WITHOUT EQUALITY/WITHOUT CONSENT is printed in a limited edition of 100.

"Kate Nace Day has captured something that is so often missing from the dialogue around the sex trade: the true humanity of those victimized by this multibillion dollar industry that preys on the most marginalized. This tender, beautiful and painful book is a tremendous resource for those new to understanding exploitation as well as for those of us in the field for decades."

“I was deeply moved by this work of art. I am struggling to call it a book; it is so much more. It has a multi-dimensional beauty that reflects the same in survivors of sexual exploitation. Survivors are dynamic people with strong voices, passions and pain, dignity and deep relationships with people, beliefs and the world. Without Equality/Without Consent illustrates that when they are seen and understood as fully human, survivors get closer to justice.”

"This is phenomenal, critical work in a field in desperate need of attention. This book is skillfully designed and expertly executed by pioneers in the field. If you believe in humanity and are concerned with sexual exploitation, this is a must read."
